The Fishing Doc™..because fishing is for everyone!
Some things in life are too good to give up and to our friend “Doc” Blackmore, fishing was one of them. After Doc had a mountain biking accident and was paralyzed from the chin down, he still had the desire to fish and be outdoors. We worked with him to develop a stand that would allow him to do this. The stand is now available to allowing fishing for paralyzed or disabled individuals.
The Fishing Doc™ is a motorized unit that allows use of a fishing rod and reel controlled with an interchangeable “sip & puff” or joystick controller. The unit is very durable and has been tested in many fishing situations. It has been used to catch bluegill, bass, catfish, and even trout. It can be attached to our optional stand or directly to a wheelchair. The base unit comes with the reel installed and a rod machined for easy installation.
The “sip & puff” operates using vacuum/pressure switches that initiate the pole’s action. Vacuum is created by sipping on the mouth piece. This vacuum activates the pole and brings it back to the casting position. When the vacuum is taken away, the clutch releases, and the spring casts the pole. Pressure is created by puffing into the mouth piece which controls the reel motor. The reel can run continuously or intermittently at the control of the user.
The joystick is a two way controller using the forward and back motion. When the joystick is pulled back, the casting action is initiated. The release of the joystick disengages the clutch, and the spring casts the poll. The reel motor is controlled by pushing the joystick forward. The reel can be run continuously or intermittently at the control of the user.
Control units for the “sip & puff” and the joystick are easily interchanged. The main control box that is mounted on the pole is ready to accept either controller. The power supply for The Fishing Doc™ pole is 12 volts DC. Any car or marine battery with threaded studs for the eyelets of the power cable attachment may be used. The cables are clearly marked for ease of assembly. If a car battery is used, the user may have to purchase cable ends. The battery also serves as the weight for the base of The Fishing Doc™ pole, providing necessary stability when casting and catching fish.
The Fishing Doc™ pole has an optional stand that also doubles as a cart for transporting the device. The stand has a battery compartment, wheels, a convenient handle, and a mounting bracket for the pole. The handle telescopes to allow easy loading and unloading when traveling. To adapt to varying fishing conditions, the mounting bracket has a series of holes used to change the release angle of the pole. A spring-loaded detent pin locks the device in place.
The fishing reel is a Zebco Authentic 33T Triggerspin™ with a trigger release. The hand crank has been replaced with a drive shaft ran by the reel motor. It may be necessary to set the drag on the reel depending on the fish that are being caught.
Poles are easily interchanged by loosening two socket-head cap screws with the provided hex wrench.
